Spectacular trials and exhibitions for fencing at Caruggiadi with a view to the Europeans “Genova 2025”
A special month for Ligurian fencing, with a promotional tour in the square between Chiavari (September 21), Portofino (October 5), and Genoa (October 12), interspersed with participation in the SportAbility Day (September 28).
On Saturday, in Piazza Caricamento, another special day dedicated to bringing the fundamentals and educational aspects of the discipline closer to the public took place, both through open trials and with a new edition of the now-popular relay.
Le Caruggiadi, an event included in the “Genova 2024 European Capital of Sport” program, marked another step in the “road to” initiative promoted by the organizing committee of the European Championships in Genoa 2025 (June 14-19). This initiative, coordinated by the President of the FIS Liguria Regional Committee, Giovanni Falcini, aims to build momentum for the first major international event of the new Olympic cycle.

“It was the last stop of the autumn period, an additional opportunity to raise awareness of our discipline,” says Falcini. “We are happy with the presence of our young athletes; their passion is essential to engaging new families. We have involved local clubs and are now considering resuming ‘Scherma in Piazza’ in the spring, perhaps taking the opportunity to reach the far western Ligurian region, where we are not yet present.”
Sabre, épée, and relay
The participating athletes were Martina Trigona and Lisa Santori (both from Club Scherma Voltri) for women’s sabre, Alessandro D’Antona and Giorgio Canepa (both from Club Scherma Voltri) for men’s sabre. In épée, Christian Vigo, Gregorio Cirillo, Valerio Pistacchi, and Margherita Baratta from GenovaScherma, along with Arianna Sansone and Stefano Damiani from SSD Pompilio Genova, competed. The relay was officiated by Marco Pistacchi, a referee at the Rio 2016 Games, and his colleague Arianna Pani.
The “Genova 2025” European Championships, organized with the support of FIS, are backed by the Liguria Region and the Municipality of Genoa and are sponsored by CONI and Sport e Salute. The official partners of the 2025 European Championships include Costa Edutainment, ERG, Saar Depositi Portuali, Toyota, Gruppo Spinelli, Iveco, Silomar, Riberti, Columbus Informatica, and Convention Bureau Genova.
